Together, we are working to transform the Johnston Elementary School into a community space for opportunities in Wilkinsburg.

In 2012, Johnston Elementary closed its doors after serving Wilkinsburg for nearly a century. With that closing, the borough lost a valuable resource. Beyond acting as a center for education, Johnston Elementary housed community meetings and political events and was a source of energy for the neighborhood. We formed Community Forge in 2016 with the vision of bringing that energy back. Our goal is to attract mission-driven and socially-conscious businesses, events, and partners into Wilkinsburg. We aim to use proceeds from tenancy to beautify the property, open public recreational spaces, and offer educational programs.

We are just beginning now, and if you’d like join us in the space or learn more, please reach out at Hello@Forge.Community

Volunteering and Community

Restoring Johnston Elementary for public benefit is a big project, and we can't do it alone. We want to hear your opinions, and we would love to have your help. If you are interested in volunteering with us – please drop us a line.

Leasing Space

We are meeting with interested partners now to discuss affordable, flexible leasing/rental opportunities for Classrooms and Multi-Purpose Areas, which will be available Fall 2017 as offices, co-working rooms, and event spaces.

Our mission statement: “Grow an inclusive Community Center dedicated to supporting Wilkinsburg by cultivating Arts, Civic Engagement, Athletics, Education, and mission-driven Small Business.”

We will soon be offering educational programs through our not-for-profit partners, many of which will be subsidized for residents. Stay tuned – and if there is anything specific you’d like to see, please let us know.
